Day 9 - Off to Oxford

Today was exhausting, but well worth the tired feet and sunburned face. Our first stop was the prestigious Bodleian Library, which is the main research library of Oxford University. We were privileged in being able to take a tour of the library, as well as the stacks, which most people don’t get to see. We even saw the conveyor belt used for distributing books. Of most interest to me was the display of books and their various forms of bindings throughout the centuries. Unfortunately, we were not permitted to take photos in this magnificent library, but if you just envision the dance scene and the invisible cloak scene of Harry in the library, that will give you an idea of its beauty since this library is the source of many of these scenes.

The rest of the day was all about C.S. Lewis, best known for his series of seven fantasy novels for children, The Chronicles of Naria. We visited his beautiful home, The Kilns, and saw many artifacts, including nine wardrobes.
I wonder which one was his inspiration for the books.

We then visited Holy Trinity Church, where Lewis worshiped and was buried in the churchyard. Did you know Lewis died on the same day that John F. Kennedy was assassinated? An etched glass window in the church was dedicated to Lewis, and highlighted the world of Narnia. This small parish church was humbled in the world of massive cathedrals we had previously visited.

At days end, we dined at the pub where Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, and other literary figures known as The Inklings met in the Rabbit Room for readings, book discussions, and drink,
The Eagle and the Child. By the time this long day was finished, we really felt like we had spent a day in the life of C.S. Lewis. It was a truly amazing day! PIMMS all around!
